ANDY

(smiling)

That’s the truth, Brooksie.

BROOKS moves his queen. Andy smiles and makes his move. He reaches for one of Red’s cigarettes.

RED

Nuh-uh, no smokes. New rules.

ANDY

Since when?

RED

Since you started making them disappear.

Andy laughs and shakes his head. RED lights Brooks’s cigarette.

RED (V.O.)

Me and Andy, we’d talk about the world out there. The world that went on without us. We’d talk about how it felt on the outside. About all those people, and all their lives. We’d talk about anything really. Except why we’re here.

BROOKS moves his knight. Andy leans forward, studying the board.

ANDY

In chess, the small pawn can take down a king.

BROOKS looks up, as Andy makes his move.

BROOKS

Yeah, tell that to his king-hood.

Andy sits back with a smile. BROOKS studies the board.

BROOKS (V.O.)

The man’s been in here fifty years, Heywood. Fifty years. This here’s my life, Red. Come to grips with it or end up like Brooks Hatlen.

RED

Oh, you’re a fine one to talk.

BROOKS

What’re you talking about?

RED

Andy.

Andy gets up, carrying the chess pieces.

BROOKS

What about him?

RED

Him. Andy. You know what I mean.

Brooks turns, surveying Andy as he walks away.

Scene 3:

Act 2:

Scene 1:

Emma, Peter, and Alex continue to search for the necklace. As they’re walking through the park, they see a little girl playing with something shiny.

ALEX: (pointing) Hey, look over there. Maybe that girl has something that could help us.

Scene 2:

The trio approaches the little girl and asks if she has seen the necklace. The little girl hands it over to Emma, who is overjoyed.

EMMA: (crying) Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to me.

PETER: (grinning) That was amazing. I can’t believe we found it.

ALEX: (smiling) I’m glad I could help.

Scene 3:

As Emma puts on her necklace, she thanks Alex and gives him a hug.

EMMA: (grateful) I couldn’t have found it without you. Thank you so much.

ALEX: (smiling) I’m just glad we could help. Take care.

PETER: (puzzled) Wait, how did you know to look for the little girl?

ALEX: (mysteriously) I guess I just had a hunch.
